Annual Meeting & Awards Banquet

More than 250 beef producers gathered at the Makoy Center in Hilliard on January 23, 2010, for the annual meeting and awards banquet of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA). The annual event featured policy development sessions, OCA annual meeting and OCA awards.

OCA’s membership committee reported that 2009 was a record setting membership year and membership renewals for 2010 are steady. The Beef Improvement Committee gave an update on the Seedstock Improvement Sales and the Ohio Beef Expo. Representatives from the Carroll County Cattlemen’s Association gave attendees a preview of this year’s Summer Roundup that will be held August 20-21 in Carroll County.

Bill Donald, NCBA Vice-President from Montana, gave an update on NCBA activities as well as discussed many of the issues NCBA is working on for the beef industry. Donald’s top five policy areas included: death tax, climate change, food safety, antibiotics and government intrusion in markets.

OCA Board Member Bev Roe, of Butler County, coordinated the policy development portion of the OCA Annual Meeting. These resolutions covered such topics as EQIP, predator control, animal health and climate change.

OCA’s Membership Committee also recognized the members of OCA’s Top Hand Recruiting Club. Land O’Lakes Feed and Quality Liquid Feed sponsored the awards.

OCA members and guests reconvened at 6:00 p.m. in the banquet room of the Makoy Center to celebrate another successful year and to recognize the Ohio beef industry’s best and brightest.

An early highlight of the banquet included the crowning of 2010 Ohio Beef Queen Jacquelyn Keller of Licking County. Rounding out Keller’s court will be first runner-up Bexlie Beam, Clinton County, and second runner-up Hannah Oyster, Stark County.

Thirteen scholarships were presented to outstanding youth during the awards banquet. Steve R. Rauch Benchmark of Excellence scholarship recipients included: Christina Enger, Richland County; Catherine Shaw, Fairfield County; and Krystin Bachman, Fairfield County. Heather Bradford, Auglaize County; Augustus Bonham, Fayette County; and Evan Earich, Pickaway County; Lindsey Grimes, Highland County; were awarded $1,000 Tagged for Greatness Scholarships, which are funded with the sales of the Ohio Beef license plate. Seth Miller, Williams County; Lacey Uhler, Wayne County; and Emily Warnimont, Hancock County; received a $1,000 Country Club Scholarship, which was funded by the putt putt course at the 2009 Ohio State Fair. The Ohio CattleWomen’s Association awarded scholarships to Kathy Buehler, Shelby County; Mallory Earich, Pickaway County; and Joshua Werling, Mercer County. 

OCA also recognized county associations that incorporate new or creative activities to build stronger relationships with the state group, to promote beef, or to emphasize community involvement. Highland County was announced as the outstanding county affiliate for 2009 and received a $500 award. The Highland County group then donated their $500 cash prize to support the efforts of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation.  Stark County was announced as the outstanding beef promotion and special events affiliate and received a $200 award. Licking County was also recognized as the outstanding membership growth and communications affiliate and received a $200 award.

The special evening for beef producers continued with awards being presented to OCA Young Cattlemen of the Year  Mike and Pam Haley, Wayne County; OCA Industry Service Award winner Dave Puthoff, Auglaize County; and OCA Industry Excellence Award recipient Frank Phelps, Logan County.

Adams Farms of Highland County received the Commercial Cattleman of the Year Award while Licking County’s Way-View Cattle LLC was awarded the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award.

Awards in these categories were sponsored by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association with ABN Radio, Ohio’s Country Journal, Farm World and Farm and Dairy.

During the banquet Mike Carper, of Delaware County, handed over the reigns of OCA President to David Felumlee, of Licking County. Carper has served as OCA President the past two years.

OCA recognized the Highland County Cattlemen’s Association as the 2009 Outstanding County Affiliate. Pictured are representatives of the Highland County Cattlemen’s Association who received a check for $500 which they were awarded for use in their county promotional and membership efforts.

 


The Stark  County Cattlemen’s Association was recognized by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association as the Outstanding Beef Promotion and Special Events Affiliate for 2009 and was presented a $200 check for use in their county.


 

The Licking County Cattlemen’s Association was recognized by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association as the Outstanding Membership Growth and Communications Affiliate for 2009 and was presented a $200 check for use in their county.
