BEST Banquet               

The 2012 OCA BEST Banquet will take place June 2, 2012 at the Ohio Expo Center. Highlights from the 2011 banquet are below.


Over 400 people were in attendance to celebrate the 2010-2011 Ohio Cattlemen’s Association BEST (Beef Exhibitor Show Total) Program as it wrapped up on June 4 with its annual awards banquet held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. Several representatives of the program’s sponsoring partners were on hand to help with the presentation of more than $25,000 worth of awards in the form of U.S. Savings Bonds, luggage, belt buckles, coats, cowhide tables, trophies and show materials. This year’s sponsoring partners included: Bob Evans, Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, Green Oak Farms, M.H. Eby and the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.

Over 415 head of cattle and more than 310 youth were entered in the program this year. The 2010-2011 BEST program featured 16 sanctioned shows and weaved its way across the state, from as far west as Greene County to as far east as Tuscarawas County. These shows could not take place without the tremendous support and dedication from the following associations and organizations: Allen County Cattlemen’s Association, The Ohio State University Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, The Ohio State University Saddle & Sirloin Club, The Ohio State University Alpha Gamma Sigma Fraternity, Gallia County Cattlemen’s Association, Clark County Cattlemen’s Association, Wilmington College Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity, Cedarville Hot Shots 4-H Club, Greene County Cattlemen’s Association, Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, Buckeye Classic Committee and Tuscarawas County Cattlemen’s Association.  

Banquet Sponsors

The BEST program also receives tremendous support for awards and the awards banquet. The 2010-2011 banquet and award sponsors were Bob Evans, Hamilton Insurance Agency, Harsh’s Farm Service, Highland Livestock Supply, Kent Feeds Inc., Merchants National Bank, R & R Fabrication by Design, ShowRite Show Feeds by Hubbard Feeds, Sullivan Supply, Tru-Test livestock scales, Umbarger Show Feeds and Weaver Leather. These sponsors donated a wonderful set of door prizes and offered monetary support for awards.

State breed associations sponsored savings bonds for the winners in each of the respective breeds: Buckeye Hereford Association, Ohio Angus Association, Ohio Chianina Association, Ohio Mid-Eastern Maine-Anjou Association and Ohio Shorthorn Breeders Association. The Ohio Cattlemen's Association provided savings bonds for the remaining breeds. 

BEST Committee
The OCA BEST program functions with the strong backing of the BEST Committee. Serving on the BEST Committee are Chairman Todd Pugh, Beth Carper, Allen Gahler, Dwight Hamilton, David Jones, John King, Kevin and Patsy Miller, Roy Norman, Carroll Ruff and Anthony Topmiller. Show representatives on the committee were Adam Conrad,  Brittani Regula and Jeff Winkle. Serving on the BEST governing committee were three BEST exhibitors Brandon Klehm of Stark County, Seth Miller of Williams County and Sarah Simpson of Brown County.  During the BEST awards banquet, new junior representatives for the 2011-2012 season were announced, they are Sarah Simpson of Brown County; Sarah Johnson, Pickaway County; and Jessica Harsh, Delaware County.  New BEST committee members include Brandon Corry, Mark Hara, Lauren Fehlan, Martin Overholt and Sally Puzacke.

Youth Scholarships
In addition to the awards won in the show ring, three BEST participants were presented with a $1,000 college scholarship. This scholarship was based on academics and extracurricular activities and not on show ring winnings. The scholarship adds an important educational component to the BEST program that the committee is very proud of. The 2010-2011 scholarships were presented to Colton Kreager of Licking County, Jordan Gilbert of Darke County and Brandon Klehm of Stark County.

M.H. Eby Trailer Winner
Another part of the BEST program awards included free use for the 2011-2012 BEST season of an 8’ x 26’ livestock trailer complete with BEST logo detailing. Eby Trailer donated the lease, and Austin Schneder of Clinton County was in shock when his name was drawn from the raffle drum containing more than 3,000 names. Participants in this year’s program received an entry into the drawing for every animal that was nominated for the program and for every animal that they showed at each show throughout the season.

Grooming Chute and Digital Livestock Scale Winners
Brittany Conkey of Defiance County was surprised when her name was drawn as the lucky recipient of the aluminum grooming chute donated by R & R Fabrication by Design.  Luke Durbin of Tuscarawas County was the winner of the digital livestock scales donated by Tru-Test livestock scales. 


iPod Winners

BEST Participants participated in a community service project collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities.  In all, BEST youth gathered nearly 1100 pounds of tabs.  The top three leading the drive were Matthew Randolph, Jefferson Co.,  Taylor Frazier of Jackson Co., and Colleen Minges, Butler Co.  Each of the top three individuals received a new iPod touch for their efforts.  Jefferson County was also recognized for their efforts as the winning county.  

Gift Certificate Winner

Essay Contest
An additional feature to the BEST program is the essay contest.  Each age division answered the question: Why should you stay involved in agriculture when you’re too old for the show ring? The essay contest provided an additional educational component to the BEST program that all age divisions could participate in. In the Junior Division, first place went to Sarah Harner of Greene County and second place went to Natalie Wagner of Brown County. The Intermediate Division winner was Sarah Johnson of Pickaway County and Jessica Harsh of Delaware County wrote the second place essay. The Senior Division was won by Colton Kreager of Licking County and second place was written by Brandon Klehm of Stark County.

16 Show Attendees
It takes a lot of time and dedication for juniors and their parents to attend any of the BEST shows, but several individuals attended all 16 BEST shows across the state.  Thirty-eight BEST participants were recognized for their efforts. The show pass has a value of $700 as it can be used to enter one animal at each show in the 2011-2012 season.  Jessica Harsh of Delaware County was drawn for the Free Show Pass.  

Thirty eight BEST Participants traveled to all 16 shows for 2010-2011 and were put in a drawing to receive a show pass for the 11-12 year. These show passes are worth $700 as they give the exhibitor a free entry to each of the shows.

Additional Show Pass Winner
Whitney Smith of Defiance County won the BEST Lottery. Her name was drawn for a door prize and he hit the jackpot as he received the second show pass of the evening.

Photography Contest   
A highlight of this year’s program was the photography contest.  The contest included four divisions: BEST Shows and Activities, Landscapes, People and Around the Farm. Three winners were awarded in each age division and an Editor’s Choice and Editor’s Choice Honorable Mention were selected from all submissions. In the Beginner Division, first and second place went to Darcy Howser of Brown County. The Junior Division winner was Natalie Wagner of Brown County, second place honors went to Desirae Logsdon of Fairfield County and third place was won by Austin Buhrow of Ottawa County. The Intermediate Division winner included: Dara Howser, Brown County. Katie Frey of Williams County took the first and second place honors from the Senior Division.  The Editor’s Choice award went to Katie Frey and Steve Johnson from the Adult Division won the Editor’s Choice Honorable Mention Award.
